Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti beat top seed Alexander Zverev of Germany 7-6 (5), 6-2 in 1 hour 42 minutes in the second round of the Paris Masters 1000 on Wednesday, in the German’s first match as World No. 1. Musetti, ranked No. 24, will face Frenchman Luca Van Assche in the last 16.

It is the Italian’s second win over a World No. 1, and he now leads Zverev 4-2 in their head-to-head. Zverev, who took the top spot on Monday, had a 16-1 record in his opening matches this season.

Musetti is the fifth man to beat a player in his first match as World No. 1 since the start of the ATP rankings in 1973, according to the ATP. He joins Jose-Luis Clerc, Sandon Stolle, Nicolas Escude and Felix Auger-Aliassime.

How Musetti beat Zverev in Paris

Musetti held all 10 of his service games and won the first-set tie-break 7-5, then broke Zverev twice in the second set. Zverev made 21 unforced errors to the Italian’s 12.

“I think he hit two very good returns,” Zverev said in German of the tie-break. “Very fast surface, everything can happen very, very fast here.”

Zverev now turns to the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin, from November 15 to 22. “The court was very, very fast, but I actually think that this is the court that it should be during the indoor season,” he said.
