“It should be good” – Holger Rune targets Davis Cup comeback on home soil by late September

Holger Rune has given his most upbeat update yet on his torn Achilles, telling Andy Roddick’s Served podcast that he hopes to make his comeback at the Davis Cup at home in Denmark in late September, then build through Tokyo and Shanghai. “I’m starting to see light at the end of the tunnel now,” said the former world No 4.

Holger Rune has offered the most encouraging update yet on his recovery from a torn Achilles, revealing that he is aiming to make his comeback at the Davis Cup on home soil in Denmark before the end of September. Speaking on Andy Roddick’s Served podcast, the former world No 4 said the long rehabilitation is finally turning a corner.

“I’m feeling great,” Rune said. “It’s a long process, as we all knew it would be, but rehab is going well. Now it’s less about rehab and more about getting ready to perform again. It’s the last little performance details that are still missing, but it should be good within the next few weeks, the next month.”

The Dane, now World n°99 thanks to 650 ATP points collected between August and October 2025, is carefully rebuilding his match load. “Last week we did a set and a half in training. Next week we’re building up to two sets, then three sets the week after,” he explained. “Things are moving in the right direction, but it’s also about lasting over a long time, many hard training days in a row. I need to be able to sustain that before going out there again. That’s why I don’t have an exact tournament yet.”

Rune ruptured his Achilles in Stockholm in October 2025, and his return has slipped again and again ever since. He first targeted the clay in May, only to withdraw from Hamburg and then Roland-Garros; the grass proved premature too, costing him Queen’s before he ruled himself out of Wimbledon. He then set his sights on the North American hard-court swing, but pulled out of Cincinnati, with his participation at the US Open in serious doubt. That makes the Davis Cup, at home in late September, the sixth comeback window he has eyed since the spring. Denmark will play against Bulgaria.

As we get close, we’ll have to see: am I ready or not?

His preferred return, though, is now clear. “We’re looking to maybe start my comeback with Davis Cup at home — that could be a possibility, and I would love that. Getting my comeback in front of all my Danish fans would be amazing,” he said. “And then lead into Tokyo and Shanghai, hopefully, that’s what we’re training for. As we get close, we’ll have to see: am I ready or not? But physically I’m holding up well, the Achilles feels good, and I’m starting to see light at the end of the tunnel now.”

Rune has been sharpening up against elite company, and it has underlined how much ground there is to make up. “I trained with Musetti, with Cobolli and Alexander Muller, and hit once with Grigor Dimitrov and one time with Jannik Sinner,” he said. “Every time I was like, ‘wow, I still have work to do on my footwork.’ They take the ball earlier, hit deeper and more accurately — you’re under constant pressure. That’s why they’re at the top of the game.”

It is not an easy injury to come back from, as Rune readily admits – “constant work every day, on and off the court” – but for the first time, the finish line is in sight.
