American Ben Shelton, the No 4 seed, edged out Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 11 seed, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 7-6 (3) to lift the Toronto Masters trophy at the Aviva Centre on Thursday night.

It’s Shelton first Masters 1000 title.

In the previous rounds of the Rogers Cup, Shelton, ranked No 7, beat second seed Taylor Fritz (6-4, 6-3), Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 9 seed (6-3, 6-4), Italian Flavio Cobolli, the No 13 seed (6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (1)), No 25 seed Brandon Nakashima (6-7 (8), 6-2, 7-6 (5)) and French qualifier Adrian Mannarino (6-2, 6-3).

Khachanov, ranked No 16, defeated German Alexander Zverev, the top seed (6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (4)), American Alex Michelsen, the No 26 seed (6-4, 7-6 (3)), Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 8 seed (6-4, 7-5), American qualifier Emilio Nava (6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-1) and Argentinian qualifier Juan Pablo Ficovich (6-4, 6-2) earlier in the tournament.
