Italian Matteo Arnaldi advanced to the second round of the Indian Wells Masters by winning against Frenchman Luca Van Assche 7-6 (6), 7-6 (3) at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Wednesday night.
Arnaldi, ranked No 40, will play second seed Carlos Alcaraz next.
