Frenchman Arthur Fils, the No 30 seed, defeated Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No 9 seed, 6-3, 7-6 (9) to advance to the quarterfinals of the BNP Paribas Open on Tuesday evening.
The opening match on Stadium 2 saw the 21-year-old Frenchman deliver a poised performance to secure his fourth career Masters 1000 quarterfinal. Fils dictated the pace from the baseline for the majority of the encounter, though the second set culminated in a high-tension tie-break that tested his psychological fortitude. Fils claimed his ninth win of the season and secured a significant upset over a top-ten opponent.
This victory serves as revenge for his loss in the Montpellier quarterfinals and improves his overall 2026 record to 9-3 across four tournaments.
The opening set was clinical for Fils, who broke the world No 9 once to take it 6-3 after earlier tournament wins over Marton Fucsovics and Dino Prizmic. The second set remained on serve until the tie-break, which became a display of pure tension as Auger-Aliassime surged to a 5-0 lead. He saved five set points to prevail.
Fils’s “tunnel vision”
“Stop complaining,” members of the French player’s box shouted during a heated moment in the second set as Fils vented his frustration toward his team. The advice was understood.
“Of course, 5-0 down, I had a small talk with Lapo, my fitness coach, he told me stop to complain and just play some tennis and be focused. From this moment, you know, I just started to block everything around and to be, like I said, tunnel vision, and just to see myself winning points and points and points. Of course, usually 5-0 down in a breaker, you’re supposed lose it, but today I managed to win it and I’m very happy.”
“If I could have only the one very relaxed, calm, and focused moments, I would sign for it”, Fils added. “But, you know, with my personality, I like to really, how you say, like, embrace the emotion. I like to sometimes to celebrate, sometimes to get a bit mad. Well, of course the goal is to never get mad, but I like to embrace the emotion. But when it gets to the important moments, I think it’s better to be very locked in and to don’t really show your emotion. Even if it’s positive emotion.”
