Serb Novak Djokovic, the No 4 seed, beat Russian Karen Khachanov 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the semi-finals of the Astana Open at the Daulet National Tennis Center in Nur-Sultan on Friday.
Djokovic, chasing his second straight title after victory in Tel Aviv last week, will face Russian Daniil Medvedev, the second seed and another former world No 1, next.
“I didn’t play as well from the baseline as I did in the first two matches, but still it was enough,” Djokovic said after the match, cited by the ATP Tour website. “I managed to produce some good tennis when it was the most needed in both sets.”
The 35-year-old Serb won against Chilean Cristian Garin (6-1, 6-1) and Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp (6-3, 6-1) ahead of his victory.
In the previous rounds of the Nur-Sultan, Khachanov, ranked No 18, defeated American Maxime Cressy (6-4, 7-6 (3)) and Croat Marin Čilić, the No 9 seed (2-6, 6-3, 6-3).
