Australian wildcard Christopher O’Connell beat Russian Alexander Shevchenko 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Adelaide Open at the Memorial Drive Tennis Centre on Wednesday night.
O’Connell, ranked No 71, will face the winner of the match between Italian Lorenzo Sonego and American Sebastian Korda, the No 3 seed, next.
Ahead of his victory, the Australian won against French qualifier Arthur Rinderknech (6-4, 6-4).
Shevchenko, ranked No 48, edged out Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry, the No 6 seed (7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-5) in the previous round of the Adelaide tournament.
