Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 3 seed, moved into the last 16 of the Barcelona Open by beating American Ben Shelton 6-2, 7-6 (1) at Real Club de Tenis Barcelona on Tuesday.
Ruud, ranked No 3, will face the winner of the match between Italian Francesco Passaro and Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 15 seed, next.
In the previous round of the Barcelona tournament, Shelton, ranked No 37, won against Mackenzie McDonald (7-5, 6-4).
