Arthur Rinderknech edged out Hugo Gaston 6-7 (6), 6-4, 7-5 to reach the second round of the Bucharest Open at the National Tennis Centre.
Rinderknech, ranked No 79, will play No 4 seed Alejandro Tabilo next.
