Cerundolo finishes off Ruud in Miami for back-to-back Masters quarter-finals

Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 23 seed, defeated Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 5 seed, 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Miami Masters at the Hard Rock Stadium on Tuesday.

The match had a lengthy rain delay with Cerundolo up 5-1 in the second set, but that did not deter the Argentinian who makes back-to-back Masters 1000 quarter-finals off the back of his last eight run in Indian Wells earlier this month.

He also improves his record to 12-3 in Miami, and 14-14 against top-10 opponents over the course of his career, with three of those wins coming in 2025 alone.

“Yeah super happy, it’s always difficult when you are playing a really good match, in control, to stop for the rain,” Cerundolo said afterwards. “But I think I was chill, I came back here to the match confident. I think I played a really good service game, super happy to get back-to-back quarter-finals in Masters 1000 on US hardcourts.

“I’m feeling really good with my game, super confident. Trying to be aggressive when I can, trying not to get too excited and over-hit the shots. Reading the game really well, hopefully I can keep going like this.”

Cerundolo, ranked No 24, will face Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, the No 14 seed, next.

The Argentinian won against Frenchman Alexandre Muller (6-1, 6-2) and American Tommy Paul, the No 12 seed (6-2, 7-6 (4)) in the previous rounds of the Miami Open.

Earlier in the tournament, Ruud, ranked No 6, edged out Serb Miomir Kecmanovic (3-6, 6-4, 6-4) and won against Chilean Alejandro Tabilo, the No 30 seed (6-4, 7-6 (4)).
