Australian Christopher O’Connell defeated Japanese Taro Daniel 7-6 (10), 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals of the Chengdu Open at the Sichuan International Tennis Center on Friday night.

O’Connell, ranked No 53, will face the winner of the match between Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, the No 3 seed, and Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas next.

In the previous round of the Chengdu tournament, the Australian won against Russian qualifier Alibek Kachmazov (7-6 (3), 6-4).

Daniel, ranked No 95, beat Australian Aleksandar Vukic, the No 8 seed (4-6, 6-4, 6-2) in the previous round of the Chengdu tournament.
