Chinese wildcard Yunchaokete Bu advanced to the last four of the China Open by beating Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 4 seed, 7-5, 6-4 at the Olympic Green Tennis Center.
The home hope, currently ranked 96th in the world, put in an extraordinary performance to disrupt Rublev’s usually metronomic rhythm.
Rublev failed to earn a single break, with Bu saving all four break points he faced while converting two of the three he was able to generate on the Russian’s serve.
Bu, ranked No 96, will play Italian Jannik Sinner, the top seed, next.
The 22-year-old Chinese edged out Juncheng Shang (6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-4) and beat Italian Lorenzo Musetti, the No 6 seed (6-2, 6-4) in the previous rounds of the Beijing tournament.
Earlier in the tournament, Rublev, ranked No 6, edged out Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta (6-0, 4-6, 6-4) and defeated Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (6-4, 7-5).
