Cincinnati Masters: Popyrin reaches last eight, could face Tsitsipas next

Australian lucky loser Alexei Popyrin reached the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Masters by defeating Finn Emil Ruusuvuori 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 at the Linder Tennis Family Center on Thursday evening.

Popyrin, ranked No 58, will play the winner of the match between Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 4 seed, and Pole Hubert Hurkacz next.

The Australian edged out German lucky loser Daniel Altmaier (6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4) and benefited from the forfeit of Chilean Nicolas Jarry earlier in the tournament.

In the previous rounds of the Cincy Open, Ruusuvuori, ranked No 60, won against French qualifier Corentin Moutet (6-4, 6-2) and edged out Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 7 seed (7-6 (10), 5-7, 7-6 (3)).
