Frenchman Gregoire Barrere beat Japan’s Shintaro Mochizuki 6-4, 6-7 (7), 6-3 to advance to the second round of the Citi Open at Rock Creek Park Tennis Center in Washington on Monday night.

Qualifier Mochizuki gave a good account of himself, with the world No 200 pushing Barrere to a final set after snatching a tight second set tiebreak 9-7. However, it was Barrere’s clean hitting that made the difference, with the 29-year-old striking 25 winners to 10 unforced errors, compared to Mochizuki’s 34-23 ratio.

Barrere, ranked No 59, will play No 9 seed Daniel Evans next, who had a bye in the first round.
