Djokovic suffers shock defeat to Tabilo in Monte-Carlo
The Serbian made 18 unforced errors on his forehand as he was beaten by the Chilean on clay for the second time in a year

Former world No 1 Novak Djokovic suffered a shock defeat in his first match at this year’s Monte-Carlo Masters as he was beaten 6-3, 6-4 by Alejandro Tabilo of Chile in the second round on Wednesday.
Tabilo beat Djokovic in Rome last year but had not won back-to-back matches anywhere this year before Wednesday, when he outplayed a below-par Djokovic for the second time in 12 months.
Djokovic reached the final last time out in Miami but arrived in Monaco still struggling with an eye infection and the after-effects of a virus. He broke serve in the first game of the match but that was his only highlight, 18 unforced errors on the forehand alone telling a clear story.
“It’s been a tough year so the nerves were there,” Tabilo admitted. “I just tried to remember last time what I did well. Thank God I served well today, helped me a lot to regroup after that first game. It was an unreal match.”
Tabilo, ranked No 32, will play the winner of the match between Monégasque wildcard Valentin Vacherot and Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, the No 15 seed, next.
In the previous round of the Monte-Carlo tournament, the Chilean edged out Swiss wildcard Stan Wawrinka (1-6, 7-5, 7-5).
