European Open: Fils dismantles Varillas in 57 minutes

Arthur Fils, the No 4 seed, advanced to the semi-finals of the European Open by winning against Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas, the No 8 seed, 6-0, 6-3 at the Lotto Arena in Antwerp on Friday evening.

Blasting nine aces, 21 winners and only five unforced errors, world No 38 Fils made light work of Varillas, wrapping the match up in 57 minutes. The Frenchman is yet to lose an ATP-level quarter-final, and now sets a date with Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the top seed, next.

Ahead of his victory, the 19-year-old Frenchman beat Estonian wildcard Mark Lajal (7-6 (4), 7-6 (2)).

Varillas, ranked No 69, won against Hungarian Fabian Marozsan (7-6 (7), 6-4) and Russian Alexander Shevchenko (3-6, 6-3, 6-2) in the previous rounds of the Antwerp Open.
