Fognini’s last Italian Open ends with defeat by Fearnley
Jacob Fearnley won against Fabio Fognini 6-2, 6-3 on Thursday evening and will play No 29 seed Matteo Berrettini in the next round

Italy’s Fabio Fognini waved goodbye to the Roman crowd for the last time as he was beaten 6-2, 6-3 by Britain’s Jacob Fearnley in the first round on Thursday.
The 37-year-old wildcard, who has enjoyed maany a famous night in the Italian capital, was outplayed by the in-form Briton but received a superb reception from the fans.
“That’s it for me in Rome,” he said. I love this crowd, so much passion. (But) it’s been more and more difficult to come back, so many injuries. I’m happy with mydecision.”
Fearnley, ranked No 57, will face No 29 seed Matteo Berrettini next.
