Gijon Open: Paul makes quarter-finals

American Tommy Paul, the No 5 seed, moved into the last eight of the Gijon Open by winning against Spanish qualifier Nicolas Alvarez Varona 6-3, 7-6 (3) at the Palacio deportes on Wednesday afternoon.

Paul, ranked No 30, will play the winner of the match between Russian Andrey Rublev, the top seed, and Belarusian Ilya Ivashka next.

The American defeated Spanish wildcard Martin Landaluce (6-3, 6-0) ahead of his victory.

In the previous round, Alvarez Varona, ranked No 231, beat Argentinian qualifier Marco Trungelliti (1-6, 6-3, 6-0).
