Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 3 seed, edged out German Alexander Zverev, the second seed, 7-6 (3), 6-7 (1), 6-4 to reach the final of the Halle Open at the Owl Arena/Gerry-Weber-Stadion on Saturday.

Medvedev, ranked No 11, will play the winner of the match between Kazakh Alexander Bublik and Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 8 seed, next, in what will be his first final since Indian Wells last year; he has lost in five semi-finals since then.

It is also his first win against an opponent ranked in the Top 10 since he beat Alex de Minaur at the ATP Finals last year.

Zverev saved three match points in the second-set tiebreak to force a decider, but Medvedev fought his way through.

The Russian won against German wildcard Daniel Altmaier (6-3, 6-3), Frenchman Quentin Halys (6-2, 7-5) and American Alex Michelsen (6-4, 6-3) ahead of his victory.

In the previous rounds of the Halle tournament, Zverev, ranked No 3, beat American Marcos Giron (6-2, 6-1), Italian Lorenzo Sonego (3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2)) and Italian Flavio Cobolli (6-4, 7-6 (6)).
