Houston Open: Top seed Paul overcomes Garin in third set tiebreak
The American will meet qualifier Colton Smith in the last eight

American Tommy Paul, the top seed, edged out Chilean wildcard Cristian Garin 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5) to reach the quarter-finals of the Houston Open at River Oaks Country Club on Wednesday.
Paul, ranked No 13, will play qualifier Colton Smith next.
Garin, ranked No 133, beat Swiss Alexander Ritschard (6-3, 6-4) in the previous round of the tournament.
