Indian Wells Masters: Paul shocks ninth seed Hurkacz, through to last 16

American Tommy Paul, the No 17 seed, edged out Pole Hubert Hurkacz, the No 9 seed, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 to reach the last 16 of the Indian Wells Masters at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Monday.
Paul, ranked No 19, will play the winner of the match between Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 27 seed, and Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No 8 seed, next.
Paul has something of a track record of upsetting seeds at this tournament. Last year he beat Alexander Zverev in the second round, after defeating Andrey Rublev in the third round in 2021.
Hurkacz, meanwhile, has not won a match against a player ranked in the Top 20 this year. His last victory over a Top 20 player was in the first round of Vienna last year, where he beat then-world No 17 Frances Tiafoe.
The American beat German qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff (6-3, 6-3) in the previous round of the Indian Wells Tennis Masters.
In the second round of the Indian Wells Tennis Masters, Hurkacz, ranked No 11, won against Australian lucky loser Alexei Popyrin (6-3, 6-3).
