Japan Open: Shelton edges out Thompson to book spot in quarter-finals
Ben Shelton beat Jordan Thompson 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-3 on Wednesday and will face No 5 seed Tommy Paul in the next round

American Ben Shelton moved into the quarter-finals of the Japan Open by winning against Australian Jordan Thompson 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-3 at the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo on Wednesday.
Shelton, ranked No 19, will play No 5 seed Tommy Paul next.
In the previous round of the Tokyo Open, the 21-year-old American edged out Japanese qualifier Taro Daniel (3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2)).
Thompson, ranked No 60, beat German Alexander Zverev, the No 3 seed (6-3, 6-4) in the previous round of the Tokyo Open.
