American Ben Shelton edged out Japanese qualifier Taro Daniel 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2) to advance to the second round of the Japan Open at the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo on Tuesday night.
Shelton, ranked No 19, will face Australian Jordan Thompson next.
