Tomáš Macháč has indicated on Tuesday that he suffered a tear in his left foot at Roland-Garros, ruling him out for what he expects to be a matter of weeks but leaving him hopeful of returning for the grass-court season.
The Czech revealed the injury in a post on Instagram, referencing the moment spectators had seen him treated on court last week on the Court Philippe-Chatrier. “You may have seen me with the doctor during the second round against Zverev,” Macháč wrote, adding that he now faces “a tear in (his) left foot” and “will need some rest.”
He framed the timeline optimistically: “It’s a matter of weeks, and I’ll do everything I can to be ready for the grass-court season”, starting next week prior to Wimbledon (June 29 – July 12).
The setback removes one of the Czech Republic’s most established players from the clay finale, but the country’s strongest run in years remains alive through Jakub Mensik, into his first Roland-Garros quarter-final at 20 – the first Czech man to reach the last eight in Paris in a decade. Macháč, watching from home, sent his support: “Sending all my good vibes to Jakub Mensik – can’t wait to see more of his wins in Paris.”
The World No. 43’s spring was a study in flashes between failures – he pushed Sinner to three sets in Monte-Carlo, beat Tsitsipas in Rome, and then kept breaking down, withdrawing before his Rome meeting with Medvedev and limping out of Roland-Garros against Zverev (4-6 2-6 2-6) with the tear that now ends his clay year.
