Madrid Masters: Ugo Humbert through to third round for the first time

Frenchman Ugo Humbert, the No 13 seed, reached the third round of the Madrid Masters by winning against Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp 6-3, 6-3 at the Caja Magica on Friday evening.

Humbert, ranked No 14, will face the winner of the match between Spaniard Jaume Munar and German Jan-Lennard Struff, the No 23 seed, next. The Frenchman improved to 3-0 lifetime against Van de Zandschulp, with all three of their meetings coming at Masters 1000 level.

The victory marked Humbert’s first win at Madrid – he entered Friday’s tussle with three losses in three previous main draw appearances.

In the previous round of the Madrid tournament, Van De Zandschulp, ranked No 115, beat American Christopher Eubanks (6-3, 6-3).
