Frenchman Luca Van Assche edged out Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) to reach the second round of the Metz Open at Arènes de Metz on Monday evening.
Van Assche, ranked No 70, will play Swiss Stan Wawrinka, the No 8 seed, next.
