Miami Masters: Opelka into third round, defeating Indian Wells runner-up Rune

American Reilly Opelka reached the third round of the Miami Masters by edging out Dane Holger Rune, the No 11 seed, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) at the Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday.

Opelka and Rune battle for more than two hours, with the big American firing 21 aces down the latter’s court.

Opelka hit a staggering 44 winners, averaging 76 percent on his first-serve points and 67 percent on the second, to send the last-standing Indian Wells semi-finalist out of contention in Miami.

Opelka, ranked No 114, will face No 20 seed Tomas Machac next, for a revenge of a huge battle at the Australian Open earlier this year.

This is the first time since Indian Wells in 2022 that Opelka wins two matches at the Masters 1000 level. He then had six losses at the first round in a row. The American beat wildcard Christopher Eubanks (6-3, 7-6 (4)) in the first rond.
