Defending champion Felix Auger-Aliassime and French sensation Arthur Fils stayed on a high-stakes collision course at the Open Occitanie on Thursday, 6:30 pm local time, navigating a draw that has otherwise been decimated by upsets. The two stars secured their places in the last eight with straight-set victories, ensuring at least one marquee matchup remains for the Montpellier crowd.

Top seed Felix Auger-Aliassime, the 25-year-old Canadian ranked No 8 in the world, showed why he is the man to beat on the indoor courts of the Sud de France Arena. Facing wild card and three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka, the defending champion produced a clinical performance to win 6-4, 7-6 (3).

Auger-Aliassime relied on his trademark indoor efficiency, striking 16 aces and winning 82% of his first-serve points to neutralize the 40-year-old Swiss veteran. “It’s always a privilege to share the court with a legend like Stan, but I had to stay focused on my game and keep the intensity high from the first point,” Auger-Aliassime said following his victory on the Patrice-Dominguez court.

His quarter-final opponent will be the No 6 seed Arthur Fils. The 21-year-old Frenchman, currently ranked No 42, continued his impressive return to competition after a six-month injury layoff caused by a back stress fracture. Fils overcame fellow countryman Ugo Blanchet, the 27-year-old lucky loser ranked No 174, with a hard-fought 7-6 (4), 7-5 victory.

Fils : “I knew I would return”

After a grueling opening round where he defeated Valentin Royer 7-6 (7), 6-7 (4), 6-2, Fils showed improved sharpness against Blanchet, who had previously upset Andrea Vavassori 6-4, 6-3. “I am very happy to play in Montpellier, these are good memories,” Fils noted earlier this week. Reflecting on his physical state after his second win, he added: “I knew that, eventually, I would return and be ready to play at my best level. I’ve learned this about myself: I’m not a very anxious person.”

The quarter-final lineup highlights a tournament where favorites have struggled to survive. The local crowd witnessed a significant disappointment as No 5 seed Ugo Humbert was eliminated by fellow Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in a three-set battle, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 7-6 (7). This upset paves the way for an unexpected quarter-final between the veteran Mannarino and wild card Arthur Gea.

Further down the bracket, the departure of world No 2 seed Flavio Cobolli and No 7 seed Hubert Hurkacz has left a vacancy for a fresh face to reach the final four. American qualifier Martin Damm will face Italy’s Luca Nardi for a spot in the semifinals, while No 4 seed Tallon Griekspoor is the highest remaining seed in the bottom half and will take on qualifier Titouan Droguet.
