Qatar Open: O’Connell stuns Bautista Agut to book spot in quarter-finals

Australian Christopher O’Connell reached the last eight of the Qatar Open by edging out Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut, the No 5 seed, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha on Wednesday evening.

O’Connell, ranked No 94, will play the winner of the match between qualifier Liam Broady and Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 3 seed, next.

In the previous round of the Doha Open, the Australian won against Spanish wildcard Fernando Verdasco (6-1, 3-6, 6-0).

Bautista Agut, ranked No 28, edged out Hungarian Marton Fucsovics (7-6 (7), 5-7, 6-4) during the first round of the Doha Open.
