American Tommy Paul, the No 11 seed, reached the last 16 of the Rome Masters by edging out No 19 seed Tomas Machac 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-4 at the Foro Italico in Roma on Monday.
Paul, ranked No 12, will face Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 7 seed, next.
The American beat Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut (6-1, 6-4) ahead of his victory.
In the previous round of the Italian Open, Machac, ranked No 20, won against American Learner Tien (6-4, 6-4).
