Italian second seed Jannik Sinner defeated American No 25 seed Learner Tien 6-1, 6-2 to reach the BNP Paribas Open semifinals on Thursday evening. This victory sets up a semifinal clash against German No 4 seed Alexander Zverev, who earlier defeated Arthur Fils.
The world No 2 provided a performance that ensured the young American was never a threat throughout the 64-minute contest. Sinner entered the match facing a significant change of program after his previous grueling battle against Joao Fonseca, which had required two tie-breaks to resolve.
While Tien likely dreamed of challenging the Italian in a similar fashion, the pressure of the occasion led him to overplay and commit 28 total errors. Sinner capitalized on this lack of discipline by maintaining a relentless depth that forced the teenager into uncomfortable positions.
Sinner advances to face Zverev in marquee semifinal
The match was defined by Sinner’s absolute control over his opponent’s service games. Tien struggled to find any rhythm behind his delivery and was broken in his 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 6th service games across the two sets. Although the American had shown great poise in his previous wins over Ben Shelton and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, he could not replicate that level under the Sinner barrage.
The first set alone saw Tien rack up 10 unforced and 10 forced errors as he attempted to match the Italian’s pace. While the American crowd hoped for a comeback in the second set, Sinner remained rock solid from the baseline to close out a 6-1, 6-2 victory that underscores his status as the main challenger for Carlos Alcaraz, undefeated in 2026, and Jack Draper, the defending champion.
