American Taylor Fritz, the second seed, defeated Hungarian qualifier Marton Fucsovics 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the last four of the Stuttgart Open at Tennisclub Weissenhof Stuttgart on Friday.
Fritz, ranked No 7, will face Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No 4 seed, next. Fritz has beaten Auger-Aliassime in two of their three previous meetings.
“I think regardless of the surface, when Felix and I have played, it has been on pretty fast hard courts, so it has always come down to a lot of serving and one or two breaks,” Fritz said, quoted by the ATP Tour website. “I think it will be a similar situation.”
The American won against Frenchman Quentin Halys (6-3, 7-6 (6)) ahead of his victory.
In the previous rounds of the Stuttgart tournament, Fucsovics, ranked No 112, won against German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann (7-5, 6-4) and Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech (7-6 (4), 6-3).
Stuttgart ATP 250, other last eight results (Tennisclub Weissenhof Stuttgart, grass, EUR 751.630, most recent results first):
- Ben Shelton vs. Jiri Lehecka
- Alexander Zverev vs. Brandon Nakashima
- Felix Auger-Aliassime beat Justin Engel (WC): 7-6 (3), 6-3
