Stuttgart Open: O’Connell beats Sonego to make quarter-finals

Christopher O’Connell won against Lorenzo Sonego 7-6 (5), 6-3 on Wednesday. He’ll play the winner of the match between Pole Hubert Hurkacz, the No 4 seed, and Japanese qualifier Yosuke Watanuki in the next round

Australian Christopher O’Connell won against Italian Lorenzo Sonego 7-6 (5), 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals of the Stuttgart Open at Tennis Club Weissenhof on Wednesday.

O’Connell, ranked No 74, will face the winner of the match between Pole Hubert Hurkacz, the No 4 seed, and Japanese qualifier Yosuke Watanuki next.

Ahead of his victory, the Australian defeated German Daniel Altmaier (6-3, 6-1).

Sonego, ranked No 41, beat No 7 seed Matteo Berrettini (6-1, 6-2) in the previous round of the Stuttgart tournament.
