German wildcard Justin Engel reached the quarter-finals of the Stuttgart Open by winning against American Alex Michelsen, the No 7 seed, 6-4, 6-4 at Tennisclub Weissenhof Stuttgart on Thursday.
Engel, ranked No 281, will play the winner of the match between Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No 4 seed, next.
In the previous round of the Stuttgart tournament, the 17-year-old German edged out Australian qualifier James Duckworth (4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5)).
Michelsen, ranked No 35, defeated Frenchman Gael Monfils (6-4, 4-6, 6-3) in the previous round of the Stuttgart tournament.
