Young American Learner Tien continues his breakthrough 2026 season by navigating two tense tiebreaks to defeat Australia’s Adam Walton 7-6(3), 7-6(8) and advance to the third round at Indian Wells. The 20-year-old left-hander from Irvine, California demonstrated the poise that has defined his rapid ascent to world No. 27, successfully defending his No. 25 seed status on Stadium 3.

The victory moves Tien into a highly anticipated third-round encounter against the winner of the blockbuster clash between No. 8 seed Ben Shelton and Reilly Opelka. A matchup with Shelton would represent a battle between the premier young American lefties, while a meeting with the 6-foot-11 Opelka would provide a significant test against one of the tour’s most formidable serves.

Walton’s opportunities

The match was decided by Tien’s superior execution in the most critical moments, particularly in a marathon 10-8 second-set breaker. While Walton, ranked No. 91, proved effective on serve throughout, he was unable to capitalize on two set points in the second set to force a decider, at 6-5 and 8-7.

Walton arrived in the second round with confidence following a 6-3, 6-3 win over Frenchman Quentin Halys, but he found no way through Tien’s defense. The opening set saw neither player able to establish a decisive lead, resulting in a tiebreak where Tien’s baseline precision earned him a comfortable 7-3 win.

In the second set, Walton increased the pressure on the Tien delivery, creating multiple opportunities to extend the match. However, Tien remained composed, relying on the tactical sense that led him to the Australian Open quarterfinals earlier this season. After securing the win, Tien improves his professional head-to-head record against Walton to 2-0.
