Just a few days after taking part in the Laver Cup in San Francisco, where Team Europe lost to Team World, Carlos Alcaraz is already back in competition, this time in Tokyo. It’s the first time in his career that the Spanish player is competing in the Japanese tournament. The defending champion in Beijing, he decided to try something different this week, perhaps to avoid his Italian rival Jannik Sinner.

It’s also the first time since the 2023 US Open that the Spaniard will play a tournament as the world No. 1. With seven titles already won this year, his best total in a single season, including two Grand Slams, Carlos Alcaraz is the most decorated player of 2025 so far. He now has the chance to add to those stats in Tokyo. Speaking to the press, he looked back on his season so far with a smile.

“This is the best season I’ve ever had. I’ve achieved great things, played excellent tennis, and competed in some very good matches. I’ve also grown a lot as a player on court. Of course, the year could always be better, but I can’t complain about the season I’m having so far,” said the Murcian.

Djokovic’s 24 Grand Slams aren’t something I’m thinking about right now

At 22 years old, Carlos Alcaraz already owns six Grand Slam titles and is ahead of the pace set by members of the Big 3 at the same age. Could the world No. 1 one day match, or even surpass, Novak Djokovic?

“Djokovic’s 24 Grand Slams aren’t something I’m thinking about right now,” the Spaniard replied. “People often ask me what my goal in tennis is. I always say that I want to measure up to the legends or the greatest players in history, but I’m not focused on that at the moment.”

“I’ve already accomplished great things at 22, but I don’t know how many tournaments I’ll be able to win in the future. I believe I need to take care of the small details every day, keep training, and we’ll see what happens. No one knows what the future holds, so I prefer to keep doing things the right way and stay on the right path, trying to be the best tennis player and the best person I can be. That’s all I think about.”
