Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 9 seed, edged out American Frances Tiafoe, the No 7 seed, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 to move into the last 8 of the Toronto Masters at the Aviva Centre on Sunday.
De Minaur, ranked No 13, will face the winner of the match between Italian Flavio Cobolli, the No 13 seed, and American Ben Shelton, the No 4 seed, next.
The match shifted at 4-4 in the third set, with the score at deuce on Tiafoe’s serve. De Minaur produced incredible defense to deny Tiafoe a deserved point. ADM eventually broke Tiafoe in this game and then held serve in the following game.
De Minaur is still undefeated on the summer American swing after his win at Washington. Earlier in the tournament, the Australian benefited from the forfeit of Christopher O’Connell and won against Argentinian Francisco Comesana (6-4, 6-2). He’s on a seven match winning streak.
He is also the only player to reach round of 16 at all 6 ATP Masters 1000 events this year (2-4
record in R16).
Tiafoe is still seeking his first Top 10 win of the season. He hasn’t defeated any since beating No. 5 Medvedev at Laver Cup in September 2024 (0-4 since).
