Toronto Masters: Michelsen makes his first M1000 quarter-finals

No 26 seed Alex Michelsen advanced to the last eight of the Toronto Masters by winning against Learner Tien 6-3, 6-3 at the Aviva Centre on Saturday.
Michelsen, ranked No 34, will face the winner of the match between Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 11 seed, and Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 8 seed, next.
This is Michelsen’s first Masters 1000 quarterfinal in career. He is the youngest American ATP Masters 1000 quarter-finalist since Korda, aged 20, at 2021 Miami and the youngest at this event since Roddick, 20, who won 2003 title.
Earlier in the tournament, Alex Michelsen edged out Italian Lorenzo Musetti, the No 3 seed (3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4) and beat Chilean qualifier Tomas Barrios Vera (7-6 (7), 6-3).
Tien, ranked No 67, won against Reilly Opelka (7-6 (3), 6-3), Canadian Denis Shapovalov, the No 22 seed (7-6 (4), 7-5) and qualifier Colton Smith (6-4, 7-5).
