Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 8 seed, beat Portuguese Nuno Borges, the No 30 seed, 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the last 16 of the Toronto Masters at the Aviva Centre on Thursday.
Ruud, ranked No 13, will play Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 11 seed, next.
The Norwegian won against Russian Roman Safiullin (6-3, 6-3) ahead of his victory. Borges, ranked No 42, won against Argentinian qualifier Facundo Bagnis (5-7, 7-6 (3), 6-2).
