Toronto Masters: Qualifier Daniel upsets Mannarino in straight sets
The Japanese will face Canadian wildcard Milos Raonic in the next round

Japanese qualifier Taro Daniel won against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 7-6 (5), 6-4 to move into the second round of the Toronto Masters at the Aviva Centre on Monday night.
It was a seesaw affair initially, with world No 115 Daniel racing out to a 2-0 lead in the first set after breaking Mannarino in the opening game of the match. The Frenchman stormed right back into contention, however, squaring the set up at 2-2. Things continued on serve, with the Japanese player winning a tight tiebreak 7-5 to claim the opener.
The pair again traded breaks in the second set, and it wasn’t until the set’s tenth game that Daniel was able to gain the upper hand and break Mannarino for a third time to close out the match.
Daniel, ranked No 115, will Canadian wildcard Milos Raonic, who beat American Frances Tiafoe, the No 9 seed, in the second round. Earlier in the tournament, Daniel navigated his way through qualifying, defeating Dane Sweeny and Corentin Moutet without dropping a set.
