Toronto Masters: Davidovich Fokina blasts his way into second round

Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has raced his way into the second round of the Toronto Masters, defeating American J.J. Wolf 6-0, 6-2 at the Aviva Centre on Monday afternoon.

Having played well in Atlanta and Washington, world No 43 Wolf will have come to Toronto optimistic of making another deep run.

This all came crashing down in in a little over an hour against Davidovich Fokina, however, with the 24-year-old unable to find anything close to his best tennis in round one of the National Bank Open 2023. With Davidovich Fokina solid on serve and from the baseline, Wolf’s errors (only 38% of first serves made, and 15 unforced errors hit) were enough to sink him rapidly.

The Spaniard, ranked No 37, will play the winner of the match between German Alexander Zverev, the No 13 seed, and Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor next.
