Germany will face Poland in the United Cup final – after the closest of semi-final encounters with hosts Australia that went on until almost 2.30am.

The tie went down to the narrowest of margins in the mixed doubles, with Storm Hunter and Matthew Ebden having three match points and Laura Siegemund and Alexander Zverev needing their fifth to actually wrap it up at 7-6 (2), 6-7 (2), 15-13.

All three matches had gone the distance, with Angelique Kerber putting Germany in front by beating Ajla Tomljanovic 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7), saving two match points in the process.

“I saved two match points as well. Playing against Ajla, it’s always a tough battle, especially here in Australia,” said Kerber later.

Alex de Minaur continued his brilliant week with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Zverev that also means that he will break into the Top 10 of the ATP rankings next week – the first Australian man since Lleyton Hewitt to do so.
