US Clay Court: Machac reaches maiden ATP quarter-final

Czech qualifier Tomas Machac defeated American Marcos Giron, the No 7 seed, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals of the US Clay Court Championships at River Oaks Country Club in Houston on Saturday evening.

The victory marks the 22-year-old’s first ATP quarter-final.

Machac, ranked No 138, will play German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann, who upset No 2-seeded Tommy Paul, next.

The 22-year-old Czech won against American wildcard Jack Sock (6-2, 6-4) ahead of his victory.

In the previous round of the Houston Open, Giron, ranked No 69, won against Ecuadorian Emilio Gomez (6-0, 6-2).
