After a couple of days when the seeds were scythed down in Monte-Carlo, it was a rather more straightforward progress to the quarter-finals for most of the favourites.

Alexander Zverev – the highest seed still in the draw – dismissed Pablo Carreno Busta, 6-2, 7-5, with third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas knocking out Lazslo Djere 7-5, 7-6 (1).

Taylor Fritz, seeded tenth, beat countryman Sebastian Korda 7-6 (4), 7-5; Hubert Hurkacz, seeded 11th, beat Albert Ramos-Vinolas 7-6 (2), 6-2; and Diego Schwartzman was victorious over Lorenzo Musetti, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

The exception was Casper Ruud, who lost 6-3, 7-5 to Grigor Dimitrov.

And in a closely-contested match, Jannik Sinner came back from a set down to beat ninth seed Andrey Rublev 5-7, 6-1, 6-3.

In the only match between unseeded players, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina beat David Goffin 6-4, 6-1.

The young Spaniard continues to have a sensational week on the clay, following his straight-sets defeat of Novak Djokovic in the Round of 32.
