Alert – Australian Open: Sabalenka wins the title

Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the second seed, beat Chinese Qinwen Zheng, the No 12 seed, 6-3, 6-2 to lift the Australian Open trophy at Melbourne Park on Saturday night.

Sabalenka, ranked No 2, defeated German qualifier Ella Seidel (6-0, 6-1), qualifier Brenda Fruhvirtova (6-3, 6-2), Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko, the No 28 seed (6-0, 6-0), American Amanda Anisimova (6-3, 6-2), No 9 seed Barbora Krejcikova (6-2, 6-3) and American Coco Gauff, the No 4 seed (7-6 (2), 6-4) in the previous rounds.

Earlier in the tournament, Zheng, ranked No 15, beat American Ashlyn Krueger (3-6, 6-2, 6-3), Katie Boulter (6-3, 6-3), Yafan Wang (6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (8)), Frenchwoman Oceane Dodin (6-0, 6-3), Russian Anna Kalinskaya (6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-1) and Ukrainian qualifier Dayana Yastremska (6-4, 6-4).
