Italian Jannik Sinner, the No 4 seed, pulled off a miraculous comeback to beat Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 3 seed, 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 to lift the Australian Open trophy at Melbourne Park on Sunday night.

In the previous rounds, Sinner, ranked No 4, defeated Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp (6-4, 7-5, 6-3), Dutch qualifier Jesper De Jong (6-2, 6-2, 6-2), Argentinian Sebastian Baez, the No 26 seed (6-0, 6-1, 6-3), Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 15 seed (6-4, 7-5, 6-3), Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 5 seed (6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-3) and Serb Novak Djokovic, the top seed (6-1, 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-3).

Medvedev, ranked No 3, beat French qualifier Terence Atmane (5-7, 6-2, 6-4, 1-0 ret.), Finn Emil Ruusuvuori (3-6, 6-7 (1), 6-4, 7-6 (1), 6-0), Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No 27 seed (6-3, 6-4, 6-3), Portuguese Nuno Borges (6-3, 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-1), Pole Hubert Hurkacz, the No 9 seed (7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4) and German Alexander Zverev, the No 6 seed (5-7, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5), 6-3) earlier in the tournament.
