Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi came back against Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta, the No 14 seed, 4-6, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-1, 7-6 (4) to reach the third round of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park on Thursday.

“At the beginning, I was pretty bad in my mind” Bonzi set after the match. “I think the two first sets, I was close and very far at the same time. I didn’t play very well.”

“I had some occasion to break again, to come back in the first. And it was not perfect, but at the beginning of the serve I decided to play my chance like full chance, really go for it. The match started at this point, so it’s crazy.”

Bonzi, ranked No 48, will play the winner of the match between Frenchman Adrian Mannarino and Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 22 seed, next. Ahead of his victory, the Frenchman edged out Italian qualifier Mattia Bellucci (4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-4).

Carreno Busta, ranked No 15, won against Argentinian Pedro Cachin (7-6 (4), 6-1, 7-6 (3)) in the previous round.
