Australian Open: Linette to face Garcia in the 4th round

Pole Magda Linette moved into the last 16 of the Australian Open by defeating Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, the No 19 seed, 6-3, 6-4 at Melbourne Park on Saturday.

Linette, ranked No 45, will face Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the No 4 seed, next.

This is Linette’s first fourth round in a major tournament in career.

Ahead of her victory, the Pole won against Egyptian Mayar Sherif (7-5, 6-1) and edged out Estonian Anett Kontaveit, the No 16 seed (3-6, 6-3, 6-4).

Alexandrova, ranked No 18, beat Belgian Ysaline Bonaventure (6-2, 6-1) and American wildcard Taylor Townsend (1-6, 6-2, 6-3) in the previous rounds.
