Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 7 seed, won against Australian wildcard John Millman 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 to reach the third round of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park on Wednesday night.

Medvedev, ranked No 8, will play the winner of the match between American Sebastian Korda, the No 29 seed, and Japanese qualifier Yosuke Watanuki next.

Medvedev has not yet lost a set in two rounds, having beaten American Marcos Giron (6-0, 6-1, 6-2) in the first round.

And the Russian was pleased to get the job done in short order.

“It was a great match,” he said in his press conference afterwards. “A lot of long rallies, high level. I’m really happy that in such match you can sometimes, if you miss just some shots, you can go into five sets, like we saw today we saw with some favourites. I’m happy that I managed to stay calm and play good and win in three sets.2

Millman, ranked No 140, defeated Swiss Marc-Andrea Huesler (6-7 (8), 7-5, 6-7 (2), 6-2, 6-3).
