American lucky loser Michael Mmoh won against German Alexander Zverev, the No 12 seed, 6-7 (1), 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the third round of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park on Thursday night.

Mmoh, ranked No 107, will play American J.J. Wolf next.

The American overhauled Frenchman Laurent Lokoli (4-6, 2-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4, 6-2) in the previous round, in two days. Goffin was due to meet Lokoli in the first round but he withdrew at the very last minute.

He barely believes what’s happening to him in Melbourne. “I don’t know if I’m going to finally wake up or something”, he said. “It just doesn’t seem real. Like, the past 48 hours has been a complete whirlwind from going from being ready to go back home, booking a flight, packing my bags”. I was supposed to leave on Wednesday. “Now I’m here, and I just had the best win of my career. It just doesn’t seem real. The two change of events is just insane.”

Zverev, ranked No 13 and back from injury, defeated Peruvian lucky loser Juan Pablo Varillas (4-6, 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 (3), 6-4) in the opening match.
